The Girl in the Crystal City

And she had a seemingly perfect life.

A blonde beauty,
A talented writer,
A charming social life,
A textbook boyfriend,
A striking internship,
A life in the Crystal City.

But her car broke down today.
It was a long time coming,
Something with the actuators.
And her boyfriend didn’t show last night.
She made him dinner.
And he was supposed to drive her to work in the morning,
But he fell back asleep.
So she took an Uber,
And the driver took a wrong turn,
Taking them back on the highway,
She got charged for an extra ten minutes.
And the day before that,
She slept through a job interview,
And she needs that full time job.
She didn’t go to college,
Put herself in thousands of dollars of debt,
To not get that job.
Then she slept through a court appearance,
For a speeding ticket she can’t afford.
And her party is tomorrow,
But her package she needs for it,
Is a week late,
And the company won’t send her a refund for express shipping.
The weekend before,
Her roommate told her to meet at the bar,
And when she got there,
She was gone and wouldn’t return her text messages.
Then there were rumors about her character,
Nobody believed them,
But she can’t take the heat of lies.
Her time with the university’s therapist is done,
Due to her recent graduation,
And her insurance doesn’t cover it,
She only has three months of prescriptions left,
Then she will be out of her antidepressants,
But if it wasn’t for all the mishaps,
Perhaps her anxiety wouldn’t be so heightened.

So she puts on her sparkly heels,
With a matching blazer,
Knee high socks,
And gold hoops.
For a party she can’t afford,
But will throw anyways.
She will ostensibly giggle,
Order a drink,
And ignore the medication’s side effects.
She will dance,
Answer questions that springs the impression she has it together,
That she has a life you would be envious of.

Because,
She’s a blonde beauty,
She’s a talented writer,
With a demanding social life,
And a faultless boyfriend,
Stressing at her hectic internship,
In the Crystal City.

My Never Ending Nightmare

The Feeding

A dusty fan circulated across the room from one end to the other. It’s been a while since Augustus put it to use, so he couldn’t blame the junk for its inability to remember its single duty. Arkansas hasn’t had a summer night like this since he was a child. He lay in his damp […]

That must have been the sun!

That must have been the sun! A peak at amethyst As perfect as it can exist The frenzy she failed to resist Began the year with the relativists. A time that was white like phosphate bones, Bottles of hormones A doctor’s prescription like a tombstone That nearly sent her to the unknown. Sure it guided […]

I Was Lying in the Sun

I was lying in the sun, Near juniper shrubs and storybook villas. Not enough profit and pleasure in the telling of, The tapping of a cigarette, The brush of bare knees, A long draught of wine, Closing the shutters on balconies, With blinds made of lace at Angel’s Bay. Red watermelon hues. I’ve read […]
